About university

The University of Birmingham is a public research university in Birmingham, England. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen's College, Birmingham (founded in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery), and Mason Science College (established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason), making it the first English civic or 'red brick' university to receive its own royal charter, and the first English unitary university.

  • It is ranked 84th in the QS World University Rankings 2024, maintaining its position in the top 100 universities globally and 15th amongst UK universities.


  • In the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings Birmingham is positioned 108th out of 1,400 universities across the globe, and joint 12th out of the 100 UK universities ranked.
